Staples Center's Busy Weekend

Staples Center in LA is having a crazy weekend.  The Kings, the Lakers, and the Clippers are all hosting home playoff games, and the large Tour of California bicycle race ends there Sunday morning.

On Saturday both the Lakers and the Clippers are hosting home playoff games.  The Clippers game is on 12:30 p.m. PT, and the Lakers game is on 7:30 p.m. PT.   It takes 75 minutes to switch between two basketball courts and the Staples Center staff has done this before, so the doubleheader on Saturday will be OK.

On Sunday, the Tour of California race ends at Staples Center in the morning, the Kings-Coyotes game starts at 12 p.m. PT, and Clippers-Spurs starts at 7:30 p.m. PT.  It takes 2 hours, 15 minutes minutes to switch from hockey floor to basketball, so the Kings game can't really go into overtime.  They also have to manage the fans.

No wonder the Staples Center staff hasn't been able to sleep much.

Funniest Yearbook Prank

Again, not quite entertainment-related, but way too funny not to share.

Eight girls from a California high school pulled off the funniest yearbook prank.

Totally awesome.

Teacup Pig Hugs a Strawberry

This is not exactly entertainment-related, but it was on People.com, so I'm spreading the love.

Look at this cute picture of a teacup pig hugging a strawberry.

Awwwww...

American Idol - Finalists Revealed

American Idol revealed its two finalists last night.

SPOILER ALERT!

Jessica Sanchez and Phillip Phillips will be competing for the title next week.  I was actually surprised to see Joshua Ledet eliminated - I thought it was going to be a two-men finale.  Joshua has been one of the most consistent performers, and although I thought he was too overwrought at times, he does have a great voice.  Perhaps what ended up hurting him was the massive pimping the judges were giving him.  It was so blatant that it was almost embarrassing.  He got more standing ovations than any other contestants, and some of them were not as deserved as others.  Jimmy Iovine had already said that Joshua would get a record deal no matter what, so I'm sure he will be fine.

I would like to say that I think Jessica has an equal shot at the title, but I think Phillip will win this one unless he really, really screws up in the finale.  He has never been in the bottom 3 and he has a massive fan base despite not always doing the right songs or performing well.

However the finale ends, I have liked this season.  The top 10 contestants were excellent, and there was so much variety that it never got boring.

Glee - Props and Nationals

Glee aired a two-hour episode this past Tuesday, "Props" and "Nationals". Both episodes were full of amazing musical numbers and great moments, and it really feels like vintage Glee.  I haven't liked everything about this season (*cough*PuckandShelby*cough*), but the episodes after winter break have been pretty good, building to these two great episodes.

In "Props," Glee went meta and addressed the numerous complaints that Tina has been sidelined too much.  Tina snapped and yelled at Mr. Schuester and everyone else that she has been overlooked all year.  When at the mall, she fell and hit her head in a water fountain.  When she woke up, everyone had swapped bodies.  Tina-Rachel, Kurt-Finn, Blaine-Puck, Quinn-Sugar, Joe-Harry, Sam-Rory, Brittany-Mercedes, and Santana-Artie.  The body swaps were hilarious, and they all did a great job.  I read in interviews that the cast had a great time swapping characters, and it definitely showed.  It was also obvious how well a lot of them knew each other.  My favorites were Quinn as Sugar, Harry in dreads as Joe, and Kurt as Finn.  Tina gets a taste of what it's like to be Rachel, and she finally understands that Rachel works really hard at what she does, and a lot of people depend on her.  Tina realizes that by being a team player, she is helping everyone to shine, and she will get her turn next year.  Her rendition of Celine Dion's "Because You Loved Me" was lovely, but she doesn't quite have the powerhouse voice to carry it convincingly.  Although Tina-as-Rachel was wearing some really terrible outfits.  The episode ended with Tina and Rachel singing "What A Feeling" together, and it was a great moment that took them to the bus heading for Nationals.

Thankfully the body swaps did not last too long.  I think it would've been too much to do this for the entire episode.  In addition, I've complained in the past that Rachel doesn't get enough credit, so it's nice to see her hard work and dedication acknowledged.

The subplot with Puck and Beiste was also done sensitively.  Dot Marie Jones deserves an Emmy for her performance.  It was heartbreaking and also empowering to see her strong enough to leave Cooter.  Mark Salling also did a great job portraying Puck's despair.  He has been saddled with terrible storylines or he just popped up for a quick one-liner here and there.  He definitely made the most of this storyline.

The second hour focused on Nationals.  New Directions ran into a few issues - Mercedes getting food poisoning, having to perform first (the death slot), and the team members fighting each other because they were so passionate about winning.  The three numbers that they did were amazing, and I love the outfits.  The red dresses were sweet and elegant at the same time, and the boys looked sharp in their black suits and red ties.  The judges were Lindsay Lohan, Perez Hilton, and Rex Lee playing a politician named Marvin Fong.  Lindsay Lohan looked so much older than her 25 years.

New Directions' Nationals performance started with the Troubletones, with the addition of Tina and Quinn, singing Lady Gaga's "Edge of Glory."  (Side note: what's up with the extra Troubletones girls all-of-a-sudden showing up?  And hi, Courtney from SYTYCD!)  This number had beautiful singing and beautiful choreography, although Quinn was remarkably nimble for someone who just got out of a wheelchair.  It's a miracle!  Another funny thing was that Quinn and Tina were supposed to be last minute additions to this number because Mercedes was ill, but if you freeze on the set list that Sue was holding in the last episode, it showed that Tina and Quinn's names were already on them.

The second song was Rachel singing Celine Dion's "It's All Coming Back to Me Now."  I think this was one of the best performances on Glee ever.   Her voice sounded amazing.  No wonder Carmen Thibidoux, who came to see Rachel performed, was impressed.  I think Rachel is heading to NYADA after all.

The last song was the whole group singing Meatloaf's "Paradise by the Dashboard Light."  Not sure this was the most appropriate song choice for a bunch of high school students, but the performance was great.  The choreography was more complicated than usual and the voices blended well.

They also showed Vocal Adrenaline's performances of Nicki Minaj's "Starships" and Elton John's "Pinball Wizard."  Both were great, but "Starships" was better than "Pinball".  The choreography in "Starships," especially when the girls got thrown from top steps to the bottom, were incredible.

In the end New Directions pulled off a win, and even got respect and adoration back at McKinley.  Will Schuester and Emma slept together, Will won Teacher of the Year, and New Directions serenaded him with Queen's "We Are the Champions."

I wonder if they are setting up Jesse St. James to join Rachel and Kurt at NYADA next year.  Jonathan Groff is a regular on Kelsey Grammer's show Boss, but perhaps it's possible he can pop in.  It was clear Jesse still had feelings for Rachel.  He even told Carmen that Rachel was the most talented person he had ever met.  In many ways Jesse does "get" Rachel more than Finn, because they are obsessed about the same things, and they understand each other's drive and motivation.  However, Finn is more supportive and won't outshine Rachel, which is what she needs.  It will be interesting if they decide to revive the love triangle again.

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey

I have mentioned before how much I was looking forward to watching the documentary on Kevin Clash, the puppeteer behind Elmo.  The documentary, Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey, was released last year, and Mr. Y and I were lucky enough to catch it on PBS recently.

The documentary was very interesting and enlightening.  Kevin grew up in Turner's Station, a predominantly black suburb of Baltimore, Maryland.  He had wanted to be a puppeteer since he was very young.  How many kids start making puppets at the age of 10?  It was great to see how supportive his parents were, and they were so cute when they were interviewed about him.  They told the funny story of how Kevin took his dad's furry overcoat to make a monkey muppet when he was really young, and they were more amused than angry.

Kevin started his career by putting on puppet shows to the kids at his mom's daycare, and started working professionally for a CBS affiliate in Baltimore.  He went on to work with Bob Keeshan (Captain Kangaroo himself) and on The Great Space Coaster.  He met Kermit Love, one of the Muppet designers, on a school trip in high school, and Love became his mentor.  It was Love who got Kevin started on various gigs with Jim Henson, which eventually led him to Sesame Street.

While on Sesame Street, Kevin started with Hoots the Owl and Dr. Nobel Price.  Elmo was already on the show, but as a minor character with a deep voice as played by Brian Muehl and Richard Hunt.  One day Richard Hunt was complaining about how he didn't know what to do with Elmo, and threw the red puppet to Kevin, telling him to see what he could do with it.  Thus Elmo as we know it was born.

It's clear that Kevin loves his job.  He travels all over the world training other puppeteers, doing appearances and charity works, and he's also now a co-executive producer on Sesame Street.  It's also clear that this job took some personal tolls on him.  His marriage broke up because he was always gone, and he missed most of his daughter's childhood.  It was sweet to see him with his daughter, Shannon.

Overall the documentary presented an very fascinating and uplifting picture of Kevin Clash, and worth watching if you catch it on TV.

Sherlock is Back!

Mr. Y and I love the PBS series Sherlock, which originally airs in the UK on BBC.  I've written about its star, Benedict Cumberbatch, before.  Every time Mr. Y and I see him on screen, one of us always comments, "His eyes are so blue!"  I also like Martin Freeman from the original British The Office, and he's Bilbo Baggins in the new adaptation of The Hobbit.

The first episode of Sherlock is titled "A Scandal in Belgravia," a play on the famous Sherlock Holmes short story, "A Scandal in Bohemia."  Although the story of the show is completely original, there are several nods to the original short story.  Irene Adler makes her only appearance in "A Scandal in Bohemia," and she shows up on the show as a dominatrix who gets entangled with Sherlock.  Lara Pulver does a great job playing Adler - sexy and in control while also showing hints of vulnerability (side note: Lara was married to Joshua Dallas, who plays the Prince Charming on Once Upon a Time, and who is now dating his costar and love interest from that show, Ginnifer Goodwin).

Part of the story involves a member of the royal family being blackmailed by Adler with compromising pictures, this time a female member of the British Royal Family (Belgravia is the district that houses Buckingham Palace), instead of the King of Bohemia.  As usual, the show does a great job of modernizing the stories while keeping the integral part of Sherlock Holmes intact.  It is great to see more of Mycroft as well - Mark Gatiss plays him as a great foil to Sherlock.

I find it fascinating that although Irene Adler appears only once in the stories, she has become such an integral part of the Sherlock Holmes canon.  Perhaps the fascination is because she is the only woman who has ever outwitted Sherlock, but I also think romanticism plays a large part.  Sherlock Holmes is such an analytical, non-emotional character, so when he shows any hints of feelings, it is magnified.  The show and the latest Robert Downey, Jr.-led Sherlock Holmes movies (where Adler is played by Rachel McAdams) are more overt about casting Adler as a romantic interest for Sherlock.  However, Arthur Conan Doyle (through Dr. Watson) describes Sherlock's feelings on Irene Adler in the beginning of "A Scandal in Bohemia" as being more like admiration than love:

"To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position. He never spoke of the softer passions, save with a gibe and a sneer. They were admirable things for the observer — excellent for drawing the veil from men's motives and actions. But for the trained reasoner to admit such intrusions into his own delicate and finely adjusted temperament was to introduce a distracting factor which might throw a doubt upon all his mental results. Grit in a sensitive instrument, or a crack in one of his own high-power lenses, would not be more disturbing than a strong emotion in a nature such as his. And yet there was but one woman to him, and that woman was the late Irene Adler, of dubious and questionable memory."

The Met Gala and The James Beard Awards

New York was the site of two very different red carpets on Monday night - the Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of the Arts and the James Beard Awards at Lincoln Center.  It's rather amusing to compare the two red carpets:

Met Gala

James Beard Awards

The Met Gala is usually referred to as fashion's Oscars, and there are some jaw-dropping dresses on the red carpet (both good and bad).  Highlights for me include Beyonce's Givenchy Haute Couture dress, Cary Mulligan's Prada paillette dress, and Nina Dobrev's dramatic Donna Karan

As for Jessica Biel, I didn't like the dress, but nice arm candy.  My favorite couple, though, is Emily Blunt and John Krasinski.  They look so adorable together!

But what was up with Kirsten Dunst and Elizabeth Banks?  Those dresses are just ugly.

At the James Beard red carpet, the fashions weren't as dramatic, and in comparison to the Met Gala a bit nerdy, but it's nice to see the chefs out of their whites.  Yay for Top Chef: Texas winner Paul Qui winning Best Chef Southwest.  Plus it's nice to see another Top Chef: Texas favorite Ed Lee again!

Thirteen-Year-Old Finds Mistake at the Met

A thirteen-year-old boy, Benjamin Coady, found a mistake at one of the maps of the Byzantine Empire at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art (more colloquially known as the Met).
