Blast from the Past

My friend teatime came over for dinner tonight, and somehow we got into conversation about music that was popular in the 1990s, especially the late 90s.  We started looking up music videos on youtube and could not believe how many of the songs we still remember.  We looked everything up from Savage Garden to SWV to Janet Jackson to Mr. Big.  Teatime and I were only a year apart in college, so we knew the same songs that were playing during dance parties.

It's amazing how many of these acts are still touring around in other countries, although very few of them have all of their original members.  Mr. Big, for example, is still big in Japan.  Ace of Base is still touring in Europe.  There are also random entertainment connections, such as one of the members of SWV, Tamara Johnson, who's married to football star Eddie George, and was a contestant on Survivor.

One of the best connections to 90s music is the spoof that How I Met Your Mother did of the "More Than Words" music video.  The band Extreme released "More Than Words" as their power ballad in 1990.  (Sidenote: Mr. Y made the point that in the 80s and 90s, most of the rock bands have to have at least one power ballad, like Extreme's "More Than Words," Whitesnake's "Is This Love," Europe's "Carrie," Poison's "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," and Warrant's "Sometimes She Cries.")

How I Met Your Mother's spoof had Marshall singing "Best Night Ever" accompanied by Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt.
